Two springs ago, a crew pruned a row of hydrangeas in mid-March. Textbook timing — the same week they'd pruned them every year. The plants bloomed beautifully.
The next year, the same crew pruned the same hydrangeas in the same week. That winter had run warmer, the buds had already broken dormancy, and the cuts took the whole season's flowers with them. The owner paid $15,000 a month and got a hedge of green sticks.
Nobody did anything wrong. They followed the calendar. The calendar was the problem.
Plants keep time differently than we do
A plant doesn't know it's March 15th. It has no concept of a date. What it responds to is accumulated heat — the running total of warmth it has experienced since the cold broke. Horticulturists measure this as growing degree days (GDD): add up how far each day's temperature rose above the threshold where the plant starts growing, and you get the number the plant is actually counting.
This is why a lilac doesn't bloom on a date — it blooms at a GDD value, and that value lands on a different calendar day every year. The Minnesota DNR keeps a decades-long phenology record for the Twin Cities. In it, lilacs bloomed on April 14, 2012 — and on May 25, 2013. Same plant, same place, two consecutive springs, blooming six weeks apart. A warm winter pulls the whole season forward; a hard one shoves it back. The date on last year's calendar and the date the plant is actually ready can sit more than a month apart.
Every experienced gardener knows this in their gut. They walk the property, read the plants, and adjust. That instinct is the most valuable thing an estate firm owns. It's also trapped inside a handful of people's heads — and it doesn't scale, doesn't take a vacation, and walks out the door when they retire.
The software was built for the wrong thing
Here's what surprised me when I started building Kloro. Every tool serious landscaping firms use — the big names included — schedules work by date. Prune in week 11. Fertilize in week 14. They're descended from route-optimization and invoicing software, and they treat a high-touch estate garden the same way they'd treat a lawn-mowing run: a stop on a map, on a day, repeated.
For 80% of the green industry, that's fine. For the firms we build for — the ones managing 50, 80, 100 distinct species on a single property, where one mistimed cut costs a client relationship — it's quietly expensive. It schedules the truck correctly and the biology by accident.
What we're actually building
Kloro is an ERP for estate horticulture firms that schedules by biology, not by the calendar. We pull real weather for each property, compute the thermal time every plant on it has accumulated, and tell you this hydrangea is approaching the window where pruning becomes risky — not "it's March, prune the hydrangeas."
But GDD alone doesn't run a business. So Kloro also handles the unglamorous spine: the visits, the crews, the field reports, the client preferences, the invoices, the payments, the "can we even take on another client?" math that owners can never quite answer. The operational depth is what makes a firm switch. The biology is what makes them never switch back.
The goal is simple to say and hard to build: take the instinct that lives in your best horticulturist's head and make it a system the whole firm can run on.
Why this matters now
The firms we work with are growing, and growth is exactly where the calendar model breaks. One brilliant lead horticulturist can read 30 properties. They cannot read 300. The knowledge doesn't copy. The vacation never comes. The expertise becomes the ceiling.
We think there's a better answer than hiring another genius and hoping. Encode what the plants are actually doing, put it in front of the crew at the right moment, and let the firm scale on systems instead of heroics.
Your clients don't pay $15,000 a month for a crew that showed up on the scheduled day. They pay for a garden that's right. Getting it right means listening to what the plants are counting — and they have never, once, counted in calendar days.
